Female Boxer Polly Burns call male boxers Palookas – 1929
Female boxer Polly Burns, who fought in the 1920’s as a featherweight, pulled few punches when talking about the featherweight division with the men. In the 1929 Police Gazzette she referred to those boxers as a Lotta Palookas. In the article she talks about how she learned the fine art of boxing from her late husband. When she was asked if she was only looking to fight women, she said with laughter, “I should say not. I’ll take all corners in my class.” In the article they misprinted her name as BOBBY BURNS, when in fact her name is Polly Burns.
