In 1893, there is another fleeting reference to a locally known black female boxer from Richmond, Virginia. The skimpy coverage is as follows: “Alice Priddy (colored), a female pugilist of considerable notoriety, knocked out Annie Watson on the third round. The gate receipts didn’t cover the fine of $2.50, so she, too, will have to be cared for at the calaboose.”66    Presumably  Alice Priddy spends some time in jail, like other male boxers from the era, for her illegal fistic career. The church also seems to have played a role acting as guardian of public morality towards black women who engaged in the fistic art.
