Fight Report: Laura Serrano vs. Snodene Blakeney

Laura Serrano

Laura Serrano Fights Snodene Blakeney a Last minute Opponent

SAN ANTONIO (SEPT 23, 2001) Laura Serrano won a four-round unanimous decision in a toe-to-toe BATTLE against warrior Snodene Blakeney that stepped up to the plate to fight Serrano with one days notice.. This was not an easy fight to be made.  Serrano was scheduled to fight Layla McCarter, but one day before the fight McCarter was out.   Serranos’ team then said that today,  they had learned of Laura’s new opponent, Snodene Blakeney, and that they were also told that the fight was reduced from an eight-rounder to a four-rounder.

I spoke to Laura and asked her how she felt about McCarter not fighting.  Laura said that she was disappointed. Laura said that she had heard for a long time that McCarter wanted another shot at her, and that McCarter felt that she had won the first time they fought, and that when she McCarter had  her chance— she didn’t fight.  Laura also expressed concern that now, she was stepping into the ring with a fighter she knew nothing about.

After the fight, I spoke with Snodene Blakeney and Laura Serrano and Serrano’s trainer, Teddy Concepcíon.

I first spoke with Teddy about the fight.  Teddy said, “Laura got three head butts from Snodene, but received no cuts. Laura did a hell of a job!” Teddy also express concern about a weight discrepancy of what they were “told” Snodene weighed and what she “actually” weighed.  Teddy also said that both fighters did a “good job” and Laura remains undefeated.

I then spoke with Laura….she said that she could tell the weight difference when fighting Snodene.  Laura was pleased with the fight and felt that they gave the crowd a good show.

Lastly I spoke to Snodene and asked her why she took on such a hard opponent with one day’s notice. Snodene said that when she found out the fight was in Texas that she just had to take it, and that she felt confident that she could defeat Serrano.  Snodene felt that the fight went very well, and that she thought she had the edge in the fight.

Final scoring was 39-37, 39-37, 40-36.
