1923: Women Pugilists in Berlin Theaters

In the Sioux City Journal, August 27, 1923, Page 7, it is reported that in Berlin, Germany, there are “Lady Boxers” that are very popular and are the star attraction at the cheaper variety houses in this area.   According to this report, they say that they attract many tourists to these places of “amusement.”

In this time era, there were many groups of women boxers, who would spar in the various cabarets and music halls.   They were very energetic and in shape and boxed with great “vigor”.   One of the best-known female boxers apparently had had her nose broken and this article indicates that her nose was badly deformed.

Most of the female boxers were very young and that they were about as “scientific” as many of the men who posed as professional boxers.
