Regina Halmich of Germany became the First German Woman to become a World Champion in June of 1995
Regina Halmich of Germany celebrated a 25th year anniversary of being the first German Woman to become a World champion in June 10, 1995. Throughout Halmich’s long-running boxing career in her active time of boxing, she was considered Europe’s best-known female boxer. When retiring from the sport she was 54-1-1 (16KO), and fought for the WIBF titles throughout her career. She came all the way from Germany, to attend the event that was held in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Born on November 22, 1976, in Karlsruhe, Germany. Halmich gave up her job as a lawyer’s clerk to become a professional boxer in 1993 and competed in the sport until announcing her retirement in 2007. She was trained by Torsten Schmitz and managed by Klaus-Peter Kohl.
She held the WIBF world Junior Flyweight, Flyweight and Junior Bantamweight titles as well as the European Junior Flyweight and Flyweight titles. Full biography on WBAN, go here
A little bit of trivia, WBAN reported on June 10, 2010, a documentary called “Königin im Ring” (Queen of the Ring) about the life and boxing career of Regina Halmich was scheduled to be released to German cinemas on June 3rd. This news is according to the film company progess-film.de—–But Regina Halmich is trying to stop the documentary being shown at cinemas through the court of law. The former world champion claims that she took part in documentary on the understanding that it would be shown on TV only. She feels deceived by the film maker and is claiming for damages. It is uncertain if the documentary ever opened at Karlsruhe on 3rd June, but one thing is certain.
