Huge Triple Hitter a Success in Women’s Boxing: A Day To Remember by Sue TL Fox
(NOV 15) Saturday night brought a great night for women’s boxing on a Matchroom Boxing card, in what was reported as the “first female triple-header in the United Kingdom in boxing history” and streamed on Sky Sports, DAZN, at the SSE Arena, in Wembley for boxing fans to be treated to three fantastic matchups of women’s boxing.
Boxing fans who viewed the video footage of these six female boxers, could see that each represented the sport well, in how they handled themselves when with their opponent in the weigh-in and press conference. Every one of them were pure class!
Eddie Hearn stating: It is not women’s boxing – it is “Boxing”. No longer a novelty act, we put it on because it is great action. that women’s boxing will withstand the distance. He seems extremely positive about the progression of women’s boxing. Hearn stated how he would like to see an undisputed world champion in every division.
In the mainliner, Katie Taylor, now 18-0 (6KO), faced Miriam Gutierrezl The fight is a unification defense of Taylor’s WBA, IBF, WBC, WBO Lightweight titles.
Taylor won all ten rounds with an impressive 100-99, 100-90 and 99-91, and easily outclassed Gutierrez in last night’s world title unification bout. Gutierrez suffered her first loss as a professional boxer, and is now 13-1-0.
The WBA wrote, “Once again, Katie Taylor made it clear why she is considered one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world. The Irish boxer ran over the Spanish challenger Miriam Gutierrez from start to finish to retain her World Boxing Association (WBA), WBC, IBF and WBO Lightweight titles at the Wembley Arena in London.”
“Although the Madrid native went out to fight, she was unable to connect her power punches regularly and lost on the cards in almost every round. In the fourth round, right at the sound of the bell, Taylor took advantage of a counterattack to throw a right punch over Gutierrez’s guard and sent her to the canvas before going to the break. The rest of the fight developed in an obvious advantage for the champion, but it was quite entertaining due to the episodes of blow exchange that both offered. It was Taylor’s ninth successful defense, who has been the champion since October 28, 2017, and has been on a successful path.”
In a second female bout, Rachel Ball, finally got her shot to go for a interim WBC world title belt taking on Jorgelina Guanini, for the vacant WBA Bantamweight title. Ball won by ten round unanimous decision with judges scores of 99-91, 99-91, and 99-92. Ring rust for Guanini showed throughout the ten-rounder as she had not fought for 17 months.
In a third female bout on the card, Denaby’s Terri Harper (11-0-1, 6 KOs) faces her first WBC Mandatory challenger in Spanish-Norwegian Katharina Thanderz, now (13-1, 2 KOs). Harper stopped Thanderz 1:12 seconds of the ninth round.
In a post fight interview, Harper said that she had hurt her hand in the fourth round, which made it where she couldn’t throw it, and that it was painful when she did. Check out the video on this report on her post-fight interview for details [below].
Hearn said that Katie Taylor was Brilliant tonight, probably the best thing he had seen tonight, fighting in the inside, being aggressive. Said Gutierrez was very tough. Taylor is just amazing to watch. Terri Harper was fantastic. He said that she doesn’t at times know just how good she is in boxing. Just a big night in boxing.
In a post fight interview, Taylor said she just couldn’t get her out of the ring—that she was tough, and very dangerous and all in all it was a great performance. Her opponent hung in there. It was an amazing platform and three fantastic female fights. She said “It’s about inspiring the next generation”
