Mullen’s Fight Upstages Good Incline Main Event – Reno Evening Gazette, November 1, 1977
INCLINE VILLAGE–The main event is a good one matching an accomplished boxer against a slashing puncher, but a lot of attention will probably be focused on durable junior welterweight Julie Mullen’s fight.

Julie Mullen …fights tonight
Before the boxer, Jose Hernandez of El Paso, Texas, fights the puncher, Earl “Steambout” Young of Salt Lake City, in the 10-round main event at the Hyatt Lake Tahoe Hotel tonight, Mullen will fight Fonda Gayden of San Pedro, California, in a four-round featured event.
It will be the Virginia City fighter’s third fight since October 6 and her second in the last 40 hours. 20-year old Mullen, who is 2-0 as a professional, outpointed Toni Lear in a four-rounder in Carson City. (WBAN’s Sue TL Fox defeated Toni Lear (Rodriguez) twice as a pro. First time in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, and the second time in Salt Lake City, Utah).
Nevada Athletic Commission regulations specify that a fighter cannot fight again for three days after a four-rounder, but the rule can be waived by the commission’s executive secretary, which Johnny Magg chose to do Monday.
Mullen, nicknamed the “Girl Machine” made her professional debut here when she stopped Phyllis Brucloe, a sparring partner of Gayden. Tonight’s fight will be the first for Gayden, who has been training for eight weeks. (Female Boxers from the past had not amateur experience, and their amateur experience was fought as a pro boxer, typical example).
In the main event, Hernandez will try to use an effective jab and a sneaky right across to befuddle Young, who is 19-5-2 as a pro with 17 knockouts. The two fighters have had one common opponent, Gardnerville boxer Harvey Arnold.
Young earned a controversial draw with Arnold here last year, while Hernandez took a lopsided decision victory over him October 6. Hernandez, a physical education major at the Unversity of Texas- El Paso, is 11-2 as a pro.
An alternate on the 1972 U.S. Olympic weightlifting team, Young is managed by Marv Jensen, who once directed the career of ex-world middleweight champion Gene Fullmer.
In another fight, a welterweight eight-rounder, undefeated Robby Epps of Clovis, N.M. will fight Joe Ramos, a Cuban transplant living in Mexico. A fourth pro bout is also scheduled.
The 18-year-old Epps, who is a 10-0 as a pro, is coming off an impressive eight-round decision victory two weeks ago over veteran Mexican fighter Zovek Barrajas in Las Vegas.
Three amateur fights are also planned for the card, which begins at 8:15.
One will be a legitimate battle between amateur boxers. The other will be a grudge match, where participants hope to settle a disagreement in the ring.
Service station operator Ray May Sr. of Carson City is scheduled to face Carson design engineer. Mike Claudia in the “certified grudge match.”
