Week One: WBAN Weekly Review
WBAN has created a new segment beginning this year, the “WBAN Weekly Review”. This addition will do a weekly “recap” of news that has come in, reports, and other boxing snippets around the world.

WBAN had an opportunity this week to talk with Mia “The Knockout” St. John, and she gave us an update on what has been going on with her life in and out of the ring, and what see anticipates for 2013! Fight results with video: On December 29, 2012, at the Club Social y Cultural El Cruce, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, “La Monita” Ana Laura Esteche, now 7-2-1 (2KO), of San Martin, Argentina, won by a 10-round unanimous decision over Maria Eugenia Lopez, 6-5-2 (0KO), of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The two were fighting for the interim (FAB) lightweight title. WBAN posted the full fight on our results page for December.
Laura Ramsey update: News that Laura Ramsey will be re-entering the sport. WBAN was notified that Ramsey of Florida, is back in the gym in her “quest” to recapture a World Championship. WBAN contacted Ramsey and will hopefully be doing a major update on her.
Latest Story on Katie Taylor: There was a nice story on Katie Taylor in the Sportnewsireland.com about winning a shared amateur award with WBAN. Katie was very gracious in her remarks about the 2012 WBAN Yearly award she received.” Katie Taylor shares Amateur Boxer of the Year award with other Olympics gold medallists – SportsNews
WBAN introduces new addition to our WBAN Yearly Awards:
beginning with 2012 Yearly Awards we will have a “Special Honors” segment that features any and every female boxer, who was our “WBAN Fighter of the Month” and ANY fighter who was ranked #1 in our independent ratings in the year. We would like to give a yearly RECOGNITION of the accomplishments of these boxers! Link to Special honors
2012 WBAN Yearly Awards: We published our worldwide picks for the 2012 WBAN Yearly Awards. These picks are the MOST extensive and we feel the most accurate portrayal of what happened in 2012. We do not take these prestigious awards lightly and it takes a massive amount of time to come up with the finalists. We are proud of any and all who were listed in our awards—congrats! Link to awards
Do you want to fight blurb: We posted on WBAN that they are looking for an opponent for Anne Sophie Mathis in a six rounder. The fight takes place in Switzerland on February 15, 2013. They are looking for an opponent to fight Mathis (and probably still are). the weight class would be super welterweight, and there is an age limit of under the age of 34 (rules set up for females in Switzerland, If interested in this fight the contact info is on the homepage of WBAN.
Story published on WBAN about a USA Boxing tournament taking place in Reno, Nevada: USA Boxing will hold the first-ever Junior World Team Open, January 7-11 at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nev. The event will showcase many of the nation’s top 15 and 16-year-old boxers as the male competitors vie for the opportunity to represent the United States at the 2013 AIBA Junior Men’s World Championships in August.” Full Story

WBAN ran a story on Denzel Washington: This week WBC Cares Ambassador, Denzel Washington and his family visited the troops at Brooks Army Medical Center in Antonio, Texas. This is where soldiers come to be hospitalized in the United States, especially burn victims. There are some building there called Fisher Houses. The Fisher House is a hotel where Soldiers’ families can stay for little, or no charge, while their soldier is in the hospital.” Full Story with photos
Upcoming fights confirmed with WBAN: We were in contact with Addy and she confirmed that she will be fighting on February 15, 2013, at the Mohegan Sun. We also confirmed that on January 30, 2013, in Tijuana, Mexico, Linda “La Muñeca” Soto, of Sonora, Mexico, will be fighting Jolene Blackshear, of San Diego, California, in a six-rounder on the card. On January 24, 2013, at the Bricktown Event Center, in Oklahoma City, OK. in the mainliner, Jessica Rakoczy, of Las Vegas, Nevada, will be fighting Ada “The Ace Velez, of Miami, Florida, in a 10-rounder for the WIBA Super Featherweight world title. This is an annual event that raises money for the local Police Athletic League.
Latest update on one of WBAN’s resource team members: James Ricky Coward: James received a call from the Athletic Director at Stanford University, CA, they want to fly him out to do a weekend Technical Boxing Mittwork Seminar for the University staff and Boxing Program. James said, “I am honored to receive such an invitation from one of the world’s leading research and teaching institutions.” This is so well-deserved if you check out the training he does in boxing with the Mitts—fantastic!
In contact with Alex Ramos, of the Retired Boxers Foundation: Alex is still in New York with his father who is ill. Alex told WBAN that he gets to see his father every day and to be with his family in New York. WBAN wishes the best for Alex, his family and his father’s health to improve.
WBAN names our first female boxer of the month in 2013:
Our first pick for January 2013 Fighter of the month. It goes to Carina Moreno, who not only had a fantastic win against Susi Kentikian on December 21, 2013 in Germany. Moreno was also one of our WBAN yearly picks for 2012 for the biggest Comeback fight!

We were notified that there is an article by Ryan Songalia on female boxing in the latest edition of the mag. Songalia talks about the top five fights that boxing fans want to see.
