Anne “The Lady Warrior” Koenig – Boxer from the late 1990s

Background of Anne Koenig, in her own words – Dated October 19, 1997

At the age of 15, while studying hard as a sophomore at Palm Bay Highschool, I became interested in the Martial arts.  I took up classes at the Family Taekwon-do and Fitness Center in Melbourne, Florida.  Not long after I joined the class, I was asked to join the S.W.A.T. Team (Special Winning Attitude Team). The Team presented various demonstrations at boxing matches and other local events.

After 3 years of hard work and determination, I received my 1st degree black belt and became an instructor at the school.  During those 3 years, I became friends with many of the students, including one by the name of Chris Fillberto.

Chris Filliberto is one of the few female boxing referees in the country.  Chris introduced me to the Palm Bay Boxing Club of Palm Bay, Florida, where I had the pleasure of meeting Karate Hall of Famer Bob Ostovich; my soon to be boxing coach and good friend.

I put my training in Taekwon-do on hold to begin my training in boxing.  At that time, it was almost unheard of for a female to become a boxer, but I think that’s what made me want to do it more.

Choosing to train in boxing must have been a good choice, because of the accomplishments I’ve had.  My accomplishments include winning the Florida Sunshine State Games on July 6, 1996 in Gainesville at 113 pounds.  My next fight, I moved up in weight to 120 pounds to fight in the lightweight division.  At this particular fight, I became the first female ever to enter and win a National PAL Tournament.  The bout took place in Palm Bay, Florida on October 19, 1997 and was broadcasted on ESPN.  My last amateur fight includes winning the State Championships in Jacksonville on January 3, 1997.

Soon after that last amateur bout, I began fighting professionally at the young age of 18.  My record includes 2 wins and 1 loss. The last win included me knocking my opponent out in 28 seconds in the first round.
