Female boxer vs. Male Boxer – October 9th, 1999 in Seattle, Washington – By Sue TL Fox

(OCTOBER 5, 1999) You know that I have a lot of tolerance for what happens in women’s boxing, and will report any and everything that is of public interest on my womenboxing.com site about the events occurring in this sport.  [Top Photo by Sue TL Fox]

I am also covering the Mixed Match with Margaret MacGregor and Loi Chow on October 9th, 1999, at Mercer Arena, in Seattle, Washington —provided  my credentials don’t get pulled for speaking my mind…. But I will have to admit that I am getting just a tad bit agitated by statements MacGregor is making to the media.

For Instance, MacGregor said that she wanted to help “women’s Boxing”. It is difficult for me to believe that she can honestly think that fighting in this make-believe boxing match is promoting the legitimacy of women’s boxing.

Then I read in another article, that MacGregor said she took up boxing after her husband hit her. I found that excuse a little hard to swallow, especially in light of the fact that not only myself, who works as a police officer and deals with Domestic Violence, but for the public who are not even in law enforcement that find it appalling for her reasons for taking up the sport!.

But what really got me going was MacGregor who was quoted in several newspaper articles spewing some machoism comments like, “I’m going to rock his (Chow’s) world.”

No offense to Chow, but from the photos and boxing history of Mr. Chow that I have seen and heard about, “Minny Mouse” could probably not only “rock” his world, but “walk” all over him!

My read on Chow is— He is a circus act about to gain international attention.  A loser with a 0-2 record. No amateur fights to his name–and hasn’t fought since 1996.

If MacGregor’s management was that desperate to find a male fighter, they could have gone to a local bar and found “some man” that at least won ONE fight in his career—maybe even a bar brawl!

How about the special requirements they are making for this fight…..They limit the fight to TWO-MINUTE ROUNDS. Why IS that? I thought the MEN’S division was three – minute rounds?

Then there is the weight issue. Chow weighed about 115 lbs. a couple of weeks ago, and MacGregor fights at 130. These fighters are not even in the same weight class—but of course to make the circus-act complete, Macgregor vows to lose weight to get to 125, and Chow is going to “Chow Down” lots of food before the fight to come into the ring at 125.   Something wrong with this picture?

Lastly, MacGregor chatters about with several news media folks that she just can’t find women to fight.   I cover women boxers on my boxing site, and I will tell you that there are a surplus of women looking to fight someone like MacGregor in her weight class. I also asked a few promoters that book women’s bouts, and not one of them have ever heard from Ms. MacGregor or her team to try and book a match with their fighters. MacGregor has a whopping 3-0 record with two fighters that are barely known if known at all. She fought one girl twice.

So now let’s get down to why this fight is REALLY occurring. Notoriety, money? Or because Macgregor can’t find competition? Is she trying to help the sport of women’s boxing? Well after I spoke to people involved in setting this fight up to begin with, I will tell you what it is….Selling tickets. That is what started it, and to their surprise and amazement, the media jumped onto this mixed match,  like a baby wanting a bottle!
