Galassi and Hockmi fight to a draw

(JAN 9, 2007) Tonight in Bergamo, Italy, there was a European (EBU) flyweight Title fight between Simona Galassi, 111½, and Nadia Hockmi, 111¾. The fight was the main event of the show, which was televised on Eurosport. What was first called a win for Galassi, has now been called a draw, and the EBU European flyweight title is still vacant.  The final judges scores were 97-92, 95-95, 93-96.

Unfortunately, the fight was not what you would expect from a main event, and/or a title bout. Hockmi started the fight in her usual aggressive style, but Galassi showed some good counter punching in the first couple of rounds.

As the fight progressed it became more and more messy with both fighters spending much of the time holding and spoiling. Hockmi had a point deducted for holding in the seventh round, which seemed unfair considering Galassi was holding consistently without getting a warning.

The last 3-4 rounds of the bout indicated, that it might have been too early to let Galassi fight 10 rounds in her third pro fight. She looked tired from the seventh round onwards, while Hockmi’s experience of going 10 rounds on three previous occasions within the last year showed.

Despite the somewhat disappointing quality of this particular fight, Eurosport is to be commended for including women’s boxing on their shows. We have already seen some good women’s bouts on Eurosport within the last six months, and hope to see a lot more of the many talented women on future shows.

WBAN was also contacted by pugilatofemminile.supereva.it.  Denis expressed comments about this fight being a “theft” of it being a controversial and ridiculous result.  He said, “I am italian, but I don’t mind saying that this is a theft.
