Hagen Wins Boxing Title For Women – June 1950

In Huntington West Virginia, it was reported in a news source dated June 21, 1950, published a boxing bout between Jo Ann Hagen, of South Bend,  vs. Nancy Parker, of Chicago.  The two fought in or about this time on a Monday night prior to this write up, and said that Hagen won the bout.  It was also reported that this was a “First Ever” Historical event for West Virginia.

The said the following:  “The men brought their wives Monday night to see Jo Ann Hagen stunning in white and black satin shorts.   [Her white boxing shoes, WBAN was told by a past boyfriend of Hagen’s that they were ice skate shoes without the blades].  Hagen won by a “Decision” .

Hagen was “billed” as the women’s world featherweight champion.  The fight was described as Hagen mauling Parker through the six rounds in 16-ounce gloves.

The crowd:  There were 3,000 at the event with almost a third of them being women.   The fight went on even though Patrick Beacom of Fairmont, one of the state athlete commissioners wanted it to be “canceled….in the name of common Decency.”

Another commissioner, B.W. West refused to cancel the event on the grounds that there is no law prohibiting women from boxing.  West had a ringside seat at the event.

The promoter of the event, Dick Deutsch said that none of the fans complained and that he was surprised at the high attendance of women at the event!
