History First in Britain? Reported as Britain’s First Ever All-Women’s Card, but Three Male Bouts were on card
WBAN reported on September 23, 2008, that it had been reported in the Boxing News Magazine, that on November 16, 2008, it would be a landmark date in the history of women’s boxing, when Britain had it’s first ever all-women’s boxing card. The event took place at the Heritage Hotel in Derby, United Kingdom. The promoter was Clifton Mitchell, a long time advocate of women’s boxing.
In the article they stated that Juliette Winter, Angel McKenzie, and Laura Saperstein were to be featured on the card. In the main event, Mitchell was trying to make a fight between Saperstein and Lindsey Scragg.
The card in fact had six pro bouts on the card. Three women’s bouts, and Three male bouts. Bantamweight Juliette Winter, 117, won by points in a six-round bout over Zsofia Bedo, 120; welterweight Sara Davis won by points over Angel McKenzie, in a six-rounder; and super featherweight Suzanne Hemsley, pro debut, won a four-round bout by points over Lana Cooper.
Setting the record straight, this was not a “history First” in Britain.
