(MAR 22) On March 19th, at the Palacio Peñarol, Montevideo, Uruguay, in what appeared to be a “rip off” by accounts by boxing fans and media, Hometown queen Chris Namus of Uruguay was announced a winner shortly after her fight with Loly Munoz of Spain by a 10-round majority decision.  On Monday, March 21st, the fight was reversed to a “No Contest”.

In the ninth round of the Namus vs. Munoz bout,Namus appears to have been knocked down, and as stated on the site featuring the video they said that Namus lost her mouthpiece and won several seconds allowing her to recover.” [Ninth round video]

Munoz wrote to WBAN earlier today, and said in summary the following (translated from Spanish to English) that on Saturday, in the contest for a world championship [WPBF junior welterweight title] in Uruguay with Chris Namus, that the results were first decided as a majority decision for Namus and that the fight was made into a no contest.  Munoz also reaffirms the short 10th round by saying that the round was cut short at 1:28 seconds to prevent Namus from being stopped.  The video demonstrates that Namus appeared to be on her way out as Munoz continued to pound away on Namus with combinations.

On video where WBAN has posted a link, the ring announcer begins to read out the judges scores, and as the crowd begins to rumble, you can almost empathize with Namus as she must have begun to feel uncomfortable, especially in light of the fact that Loly Munoz left the ring in disgust after they began to read out the scores.

Fightnews.com writer Gabriel F. Cordero who broke the story when he reported on that site that the fight had been made into a “no contest”, stated the following: “Both fans and the press alike expressed outrage saying that Munoz had a ‘clear superiority’ throughout the fight and the outcome ‘hurt not only the credibility in the judges but the whole of Uruguayan boxing,’ prompting the government, through the ministry of Turisimo and Sports, to request the change.”

Boxing Fans from Uruguay also ranted on the internet of their disgust, which WBAN has posted some of those translated comments:

“Chris Namus champion retained her belt, won but lost, we all saw that she lost. The match was finished 30 seconds before and it does not comply with the terms of the sport.”

“A shame! Especially when they rang the bell 30 seconds before the end of the round to save the namus KO, pathetic! … yesterday was an embarrassment for the sport throughout Uruguay.”

In regards to Uruguay, one boxing fan wrote, “not only they rob us in the street, at bus stops and even in our homes, now but now in the … IN THE RING!”

“when people will understand that Namus is an excellent marketing product and nothing else! Arranged fights beforehand … shame!”

“I am Uruguay and I’m ashamed that you’ve won this fight.”

“I do not know whether to laugh or mourn. Freddy Sosa should be excluded to rate a fight for life, like the referee and they rang the bell. Yes, Namus be champion, but over a bridge, not a ring.” [Freddy Sosa scored the fight 97-93 for Namus]

“I am Uruguayan first feel terrible shame for blatant theft should be to punish the sport Uruguayan Uruguay bunch of delinquents.”

” Imagine the corruption that exists in other fields of various areas in Uruguay … UNFORTUNATE.”

Instead of ruling this fight a “no contest”, they need to review the 10-round bout, and if Munoz won the fight—ship her the belt—that is the only right thing to do at this point.
