Maybe Women’s Boxing should have Six Strikes you’re out! By Sue TL Fox
(JULY 20) Last night at the Sky Ute Casino, in Ignacio, Colorado, there was a women’s match on the undercard between Terri Cruz vs. Vangie Abeyta. Abeyta was stopped in the second round. The first time Cruz fought Abeyta, was last year on July 21, 2002—-in that fight, Abeyta was KO’d in the first round. Chris Cozzone of New Mexico Boxing could not have described the last-minute disaster any more accurate than when he made a reference in regard to this fight and said, “As ill-matched as the first bout was, the 2nd was even worse.”
You see folks, Vangie has had six professional boxing matches—and in ALL SIX MATCHES, she has either been KO’d or TKO’d. Abeyta dons a 0-6-0 record.
Just take a moment to view her stats…..Jackie Chavez KO’d Abeyta in 50 seconds; Marsha Budde TKO’d Abeyta in three rounds; Terri Cruz KO’d Abeyta in the first round; Carla Wilcox TKO’d Abeyta in the third round; Melinda Cooper TKO’d Abeyta in the first round; and of course last night in a rematch Cruz TKO’d Abeyta in the second round.
If this was baseball, Abeyta would be out after “Three strikes”……and YET with “Six Strikes” in the sport of boxing, and without this boxer even making it through to the end on ONE boxing match, she is continuously matched up on pro boxing cards!
Maybe it is time that we have “Six Strikes” you’re out, in the world of women’s boxing.
