Flash From the Past: Posthumous JoAnn Hagen Entered the International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame in July of 2014
JoAnn Hagen, a fighter in the fifties, was the only female to defeat Barbara Buttrick. She was very graceful in her movements when she boxed in the ring.
Some interesting tidbits on Hagan (from The Police Gazette-June 1950):
Hagen had appeared on the Steve Allen Show in November 1956. The show was viewable at the Museum of TV and Radio in NYC at one time. Hagen appeared with Phyllis Kugler, and was billed as “Champion Women Boxers”.
They first came out in dresses, and then changed in boxing gear on stage, behind a screen. All the while Allen continued to interview them. After they came out, Hagan sparred a little with Allen, who quickly gave up,and then with Kugler.
Hagan then announced that she and Kugler were having a title match.”
WBAN interviewed a past boyfriend of Hagen in 2001. We were also contacted by a relative of Hagen that said Hagen was in poor health. Eventually we were put on notice that Hagen had passed away.
It’s unfortunate to hear about Hagan’s declining health and subsequent passing. However, her legacy as a trailblazing female boxer remains intact. Her appearances on popular shows like The Steve Allen Show not only showcased her boxing skills but also highlighted her charisma and beauty. Despite the challenges she faced as a woman in a male-dominated sport, Hagan left an indelible mark on the boxing world. Her contributions continue to inspire aspiring female athletes today.
It is important to remember and celebrate the pioneers like Hagan, who paved the way for future generations of female boxers. Their courage, determination, and resilience in the face of adversity have helped break down barriers and create more opportunities for women in sports. Though Hagan may be gone, her impact lives on, reminding us of the power of perseverance and the potential within each and every one of us to challenge norms and make a lasting difference.
Hagen was in the inaugural International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on July 10, 2014. Her family attended the event and accepted her IWBHF Induction award.
