Rosi Reed Stops Bonnie Prestwood in WBB Title bout – May 30, 1980
On May 30, 1980, at the Strongbow Stadium, in Bakersfield, California, WBB’s #1 rated boxer Bonnie Prestwood, faced Rosi Reed, #3 for the vacant world title championship. Reed, weighed in at 109, and Prestwood, 110.5. Reed and Presswood were part of a main event, sharing it with a men’s bout. In the fight it was reported by Bakersfield Californian sports writer Mike Tasos, Reed who could be easily the best fighter on the card, hit Prestwood hard and often sending Prestwood reeling in every round. Marty Denkin, world reknown boxing referee stopped the fight at 1:31 in the sixth round. Other than this female bout, it was an all-male card.
The fight was reported as being “fast and furious” from the very beginning, where Prestwood continued to move forward, just to be met with stiff left jabs, and hard right cross/left hook combinations. The fans were delighted with the action-packed bout. From round one, Reed had Prestwood’s nose bleeding and throughout the fight would snap Prestwood’s head back regularly. Prestwood fought with a heart of a lion and continued to try and battle back.
At the end of the fight, at 1:31, Reed threw two crisp hooks to the head, which sent Prestwood reeling into the ropes. There were 1,200 boxing fans who paid a total of $10,103.25 to see their local favorite bring a world title belt home. The fans threw in $80 in the ring to show their appreciation for such a great female bout.
