Straight Scoop: One on One Interview with Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano! by Sue TL Fox
(JAN 4) This week WBAN received an opportunity to talk with Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano about her boxing career, the experiences she has had as a boxer, and of course what all boxing fans want to know any scoop on the Katie Taylor fight!
TL Fox: This has been a long road for you Amanda—-having your first professional fight in March of 2009….44 fights later being one of the top most sought-after female boxers in the sport. Did you ever imagine or even dream that at the time you began in the pro ranks, that you would get to this level?
Serrano: Hi Sue, it’s always an honor chatting with you.
Omg if I had the slightest idea I’d be where I am today—I still pinch myself to make sure I’m awake and it’s not a dream.
TL Fox: Before your pro debut, how long were you in training, and can you tell us about the extent of your amateur boxing experience?
Serrano: I had a real short amateur career. 10 fights on the books. I went 9-1 with 6 KO’s. I won the 2008 Staten Island Championship, the Empire State Games and the Prestigious NYC Golden Gloves. In winning the Golden gloves I beat the Number 1 ranked USA fighter. After that there was no chance to fight in the Olympics so I turned pro.
TL Fox: During your boxing career as a pro you have fought in numerous weight classes, making history in doing that, and winning world title fights in those different weight class categories…..what is it that you do training, diet, etc., to be able to fight at so many different weights, and with total success?
Serrano: Part of all the weight change’s were my trainer Jordan’s idea, he knew how hard I worked and how much discipline I had we would just continue to talk a new division after I won a new one. Madness and I went along with it lol
TL Fox: Lets move on to Katie Taylor, as that IS the hot topic of the day…there are numerous articles that are written about this and that on your potential fight with Taylor….can you give boxing fans the lowdown of what is going on with the negotiations and when this fight could take place?
Serrano: The fight with Katie Taylor has been talked about for years and both myself and Katie are up for it. My team Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian are in full talk with Eddie Hearn to make it happen this spring. Fingers crossed.
TL Fox: Do you foresee that this will BE your next fight, as with Taylor? Or other fights that may happen before Taylor?
Serrano: If negotiations go well the Katie Taylor fight will be next. It’s truly beyond my control so I’ll keep a prayer going for it
TL Fox: Eddie Hearn has said in articles that it is “almost certain” that you two will finally meet in the iconic Madison Square Garden in April of 2022—-is there any real chance of that happening in your own thoughts?
Serrano: Some dates have been mentioned but Nothing concrete, I won’t know until it’s settled.
TL Fox: Has anyone (promoters) proposed a potential date in April directly with the Madison Square Garden to have the fight booked on a particular date in the month of April?
Serrano: This is Boxing Sue the theater of the unexpected, as much as I want it to be I’m not certain yet.
TL Fox: Playing devil’s advocate, let’s go with this is really going to happen…a Taylor vs. Serrano fight in New York…there is talk about you two may be able to get a purse in the 7-figure Payday….do you feel that is a possibility?
Serrano: Those are the numbers that are being thrown back & forth. We deserve it so let’s see.
TL Fox: Going one step further: You fight Taylor, you defeat Taylor….where do you go from there? What do you want to do after the Taylor fight?
Serrano: After the Katie Taylor fight I’ll sit and figure out what’s next for me then. I don’t like answering questions about things that can happen after when you have a task at hand. All in all that question I’ll have the answer to after the Katie fight.
TL Fox: When you finally do decide to hang up the gloves…where do you see yourself outside the ring?
Serrano: After I retire I see myself playing catch up in life. I’ve done nothing other than train and fight. I’m still behind on my social skills lol. I’ll get a boyfriend & start from there.
TL Fox: Lastly, if you were to give any advice whatsoever to a new boxer, amateurs, etc., what would you tell them about the pros and cons of what you have dealt with as a boxer since being in the game?
Serrano: Well the best thing is that now is the best time to be a female boxer. You can honestly make a living and become somewhat of a celebrity if that’s what you want. I’m just blessed to be able to say I made the cut and the money. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for taking the time for the Q and A Interview!
