Team USA Dominates Final Day of 2019 Silesian Championships – by Brian Taylor, USA Boxing Press Release

Team USA entered the final day of the 2019 Silesian Women’s Championships in Gliwice, Poland with 10 boxers looking for gold, and all 10 dominated their opponents for a clean Team USA sweep.

Kayla Gomez (El Paso, Texas) started the day with her second referee stopped contest of her international debut over Poland’s Dorota Wawszcyky to earn gold. Teammate Priscila Medina (Los Angles, Calif.) continued her dominating run this week by taking all five judges’ cards and the title over Eszter Marton of Hungary.

Bantamweight Sierra Martinez (North Providence, R.I.) had a close and tough fight against Poland’s Natalia Wojciecowska, but held onto the 3-2 split decision to give the Americans their third gold medal of the tournament.

The final two junior boxers to step into the ring, Kaheil Mishoe-Elliott (Plainfield, N.J.) and Ruby Navarro (Mission, Texas), showed they were no match for their opponents, Daria Napora and Klaudia Topolewska of Poland, as both bouts were stopped in the first round by the referee.

Team SUA won their next two bouts by abandonment. Shera Mae Patricio (Waianae, Hawaii) won gold after her opponent, Eszter Marton of Hungary, threw in the towel in the second round, while Alexandra Fernandez (Splendora, Texas) dominated from the beginning against Poland’s Klaudia Kedziora to cause her corner to abandon the bout in the first round.

Nashay Bradford (Toledo, Ohio) followed suit and grabbed her first international gold following her unanimous decision win over Magdalena Sochowicz of Poland. 2018 Youth World Champion Iyana Verduzco (Los Angeles, Calif.) won her third international gold medal in her career after defeating Poland’s Izabela Rozkoszek by a 5-0 decision.

The successful day came to a close with Jasmin Fernandez (Splendora, Texas) picking up USA Boxing’s 10 gold medal following a 4-1 split decision victory over Poland’s Wiktoria Tereszczak.

Team USA leaves Poland with a total of 12 medals. Ariana Carrasco (Las Cruces, N.M.) and Reina Tellez (San Antonio, Texas) won bronze during yesterday’s bouts. Boxing National Junior and Youth Head Coach Augie Sanchez (Las Vegas, Nev.), as well as assistant coaches Alexander Duque (New York, N.Y.), Edward Ochoa Jr. (Gilbert, Ariz.), Nora Trujillo (Richmond, Texas) and Chadrick Wigle (Colorado Springs, Colo.) coached the young American team throughout the week.
