The International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame Event – Saturday, August 14th, at the Orleans Hotel and Casino!
(JUNE 1) [IWBHF Tickets: www.iwbhf.com/tickets.htm ] The coronavirus pandemic, as it did with all sports, had a debilitating effect on the sport of Women’s boxing. However, this particular sport and the athletes who have chosen to compete inside the ropes are no strangers to surmounting obstacles in their path to a boxing ring. It is, therefore, not surprising that the sport has successfully endured the turbulence of the past year and did so while maintaining what is considered, by many, to be the most talent laden lineup of boxers in it’s history. And on August 14th, the sport will once again celebrate it’s signal annual event of the year as the International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame (IWBHF) presents a historic induction ceremony, fittingly in the Mecca of boxing, Las Vegas, NV, welcoming 24 honorees.
This event, to be held at the Orleans Hotel and Casino, will include inductees voted into enshrinement in 2020, when the planned induction ceremony was cancelled by the virus, along with the 2021 honorees. It will be the seventh induction celebration and, will be, by far, the largest in the history of the international Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame.
The twenty four inductees will be once again dominated by “modern era” boxers, including nine from the 2020 class and ten newly voted into the Hall in 2021. In addition, the inductees, being honored, include a pioneer boxer (2020), a boxing promoter (2021) and three women honored for their past, present and continuing support and advocacy of the sport, two from 2020 and one elected in 2021.
The August 14th festivities will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a meet/greet session with the honorees and invited guests during which the recently established IWBHF tradition of having every female boxer sign the historic 7’ ft. high historical pioneer banner will also take place.
Dinner will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the induction ceremony scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.. Featured speakers during the ceremony will include: Christy Salters Martin, an inductee in the initial 2014 IWBHF class and the 2019 the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement. Martin is generally regarded as the first “face” of the sport’s modern day era. Martin continues to “give back” to boxing as an active promoter often featuring up and coming young fighters; Layla McCarter, a still active, highly ranked, welterweight who, in her “spare time”, is an unceasing advocate for the betterment of the sport she has graced for more than two decades; Blanca Gutierrez, a former kickboxer and boxer who has been the guiding force behind the renowned “Beautiful Brawlers” which has been responsible for teaching the sport to innumerable females, from “the ground up”; International boxing sensation Daisy Lang, 2017 IWBHF inductee, multiple world champion in boxing and combat sports, who successfully transitioned to a movie career following her retirement from the ring; and pioneer boxing sensation Graciela Casillas, who won a Bantamweight world title in 1979, and fought throughout the 1980’s and more!
Jake Gutierrez, celebrated local ring announcer will, once again, bring his unique talent to the role of Master of Ceremonies and Jill Morley, award winning film maker, will record a visual record of the event. More details to be announced soon!
